WEEK 4 FOR UED102 CLASS

Assalamualaikum,  for the last week of UED102 which is week 4, this time was lectured by DR. Muhammad Aidil Ibrahim. I was explained about taking lecture notes, plagiarism and how to calculate our GPA. Week 4 topic was quite fascinating as we can learn how to take notes during lecture class so that we can understand about the topic that had been discussed. We can also avoid ourselves from plagiarism. Then, the most important is we can know how to calculate our own GPA and aimed what we want to get in the final exam so that we can get pointer 3.5 and above.

This is the 1st task for week 4 called note-taking strategies

A low score indicates that I need some help in note taking. A high score indicates that I already using many good note-taking strategies.

WHY WE NEED TO TAKE LECTURE NOTES?

Here, I want to share sentences that discussed by Gonzalez in year 2018;

“Rather than passively taking information in, the act of encoding the information into words or pictures forms new pathways in the brain, which stores it more firmly in long‐term memory. On top of that, having the information stored in a new place gives students the opportunity to revisit it later and reinforce the learning that happened the first time around.”

So, from the sentences itself said that by taking lecture notes we can:

  • Re-read the important point in the topic that we learn

  • Remember the notes easily

  • Understand the concept from every chapter that we study

  • Catch the keyword that always questioned for the final exam

  • Get to know a new information that might not available anywhere else.

HOW TO TAKE LECTURE NOTES?

BEFORE TAKING THE NOTES:

  • We should read about the topic that will be discusses briefly.
  • Review notes from the previous lecture if the topic was related to the topic before

DURING THE LECTURE:

  • Listen carefully to our lecturer
  • Recognize the important points and keywords
  • Jot down details or examples
  • Ask question to the lecturer if there any point that we did not understand

AFTER THE LECTURE:

  • Revise our notes frequently so that we can remember
  • Review all the notes at least once a week so that we can increase our memorization skill

Here I want to share a picture that I found from google images that shows the 5 tips of note taking:

STRATEGIES TO IMPROVE OUR LISTENING SKILLS:
In order to take notes perfectly, we should have some listening skills to become an active listener so that we can easily catch up the points that have been given by the lecturer.

  1. Read briefly about the topic that will be discusses before the lecture start
  2. Sit in the first row or in the middle row so that we can always have an eye contact with the lecture
  3. Give full attention
  4. Focus our attention physically and mentally for any distractions
  5. Keep an open mind
  6. Ask and answer question to ensure understanding
This is a few more tips that we can follow:

EFFECTIVE NOTE TAKING SYSTEM:

  1. Cornell system

  2. The informal outline

  3. The block method
  4. The modified block method

  5. Mapping method

The 2nd task is a note-taking based on the lecturer live about the genetics

Next, this is continuing with the note-taking strategies above. Based on this note we have to come out with the Cornell Method and Mapping Method.

CORNELL METHOD

MAPPING METHOD

WHAT IS PLAGIARISM?

So next, we go to the topic of plagiarism. Plagiarism is the practice of taking someone else's work or ideas and passing them off as one's own by not crediting the original author. In other words, plagiarism is an act of fraud. It involves both stealing someone else's work and lying about it afterward.

TYPES OF PLAGIARISM:

This is example of types of plagiarism that I found at the Google Images.

HOW TO PREVENT PLAGIARISM?

  1. Use quotations

  2. Know how to paraphrase

  3. Include a reference page

  4. Ask our lecturer

  5. Cite our sources

  6. Try and add some value to the topic by including some of our insights

CALCULATING GPA:

What is GPA? GPA is stand for Grade Points Average. GPA can help us as a student to keep track of our progress. Knowing how to calculate GPA will helps us to make an organize and adjustments plans based on our current academic habits.

GPA CALCULATION FORMULA:

GPA = Σ (grade value x unit credit hours) ÷ Σ unit credit hours

CGPA =
Σ (GPA x total unit credit hours in 1 semester)  ÷
Σ unit credit hours for all semester

FAILURE & DISMISSAL:

So, I'm going to calculate Adam's GPA for his first semester

GPA = Σ (grade value x unit credit hours) ÷ Σ unit credit hours

Adam's GPA
= (3.3 x 3) + (3.0 x 4) + (4.0 x 3) + (3.0 x 4) + (3.7 x 4) + (2.3 x 4)  ÷ (3+4+3+4+4+4)

69.9 ÷ 22

= 3.18

So, Adam's GPA for his first semester is 3.18. If the answer is different +/-, I am sorry because I use the grade value from the chart I attached at above.

That's all for the week 4. It is complete right now week 1 until week 4. Hope you're enjoy reading my blog hehe. UED102 is such an interesting subject to learn for my first semester. Thank you!
