WEEK 3 FOR UED102 CLASS
Assalamualaikum, for sure this week is already week 3 for UED102. Time fly so fast. This week my UED102 class is lectured by Puan Faikah Binti Awang @ Ismail or lovely known as Madam Faikah. Week 3 lecture is going through about memory process, how to improve our concentration and reading system. Interestingly, we can find out the extent of our brain's ability to remember anything such as notes or explanations given by the lecturer while in class.
As we know from the picture, we often face the problem of forgetfulness whether to remember notes or whatever things are remembered. As imperfect humans, almost everyone has trouble remembering. So do you know what is memory?
Memory refers to the processes that are used to acquire, store, retain, and later retrieve information. There are three major processes involved in memory: encoding, storage, and retrieval.
So, to learn and remember, we have to follow the three major process in the picture which is encoding, storage, and retrieval. Sounds familiar right? It is because the human brain can be analogy like a computer system. Those words are usually use for the computer but can related to the human brain as well.
This is task 1 for week 3 which is memory strategies. By answering these questions, I got know my memory level.
TYPES OF MEMORY
- SENSORY MEMORY:
Sensory memory is a very brief memory that allows people to retain impressions of sensory information after the original stimulus has ceased.
Sensory memory is a very brief memory that allows people to retain impressions of sensory information after the original stimulus has ceased.
Forgetting could occur if we did not pay attention and understand the information wisely. If we study last minute for the examination or test and quiz, we also tend to forget all the notes that we are already takes from the lecture class.
This is task 2, organizational strategies, which we have to test ourselves to memorize the words given in 60 seconds.
HOW TO IMPROVE OUR MEMORY?
- Do mass practiced vs spaced practice
- Break reading material down for some period of time
- Rehearsal like repeat the information or important notes many times
- Elaboration strategies:
- Associations
For example,
UPM stand for Universiti Putra Malaysia and UKM stand for Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia - Acronyms or catchwords
- Acrostics or catchphrase
- Imagery which is we visualize the image of the information needed
- Organizational strategies
- Comprehension monitoring strategies
Then, if we want to avoid forgetfulness we have to know how to concentrate in every classes. These things are interconnected with each other. So do you know what is concentration is about?
Concentration refers to the mental effort you direct toward whatever you’re working on or learning at the moment.
This is the 3rd task which concentration strategies to test level of our concentration.
A low score indicates that I need some help improving my concentration. A high score indicates that I already using many good concentration strategies.
CAUSES OF POOR CONCENTRATION
- Lack of attention
- Lack of interest
- Lack of motivation
